How Much Does It Cost to Build an AI Agent in Kenya?

A young man in a pale shirt and black over-ear headphones types on a silver laptop showing lines of code, seated at a wooden desk in front of an orange wall. A second person wearing a black t-shirt and earphones is partly visible at the left edge.

For AI agent cost Kenya planning, budget two lines: a one-off build and a monthly run cost that continues after launch. In the illustrative model below, a simple customer assistant comes to about KES 922,350 to build and about KES 16,768 a month to run, while a regulated multi-agent system comes to about KES 8,352,750 to build and about KES 332,840 a month. These figures come from stated assumptions and formulas you can re-run, not from quotes, so treat them as a starting budget rather than a price.

Why one-off and run costs need separate lines

The build is a project with an end date. Run cost recurs for as long as the agent is live. It has five parts: model inference (the tokens the agent reads and writes), hosting, messaging fees where the agent runs on WhatsApp, monitoring and support, and integration upkeep.

One published benchmark is a Kenyan AI services guide that advises budgeting "roughly 15 to 25 per cent of build cost per year" for maintenance and running costs, per aiconsultant.co.ke. The model below tests that rule of thumb against bottom-up numbers rather than assuming it holds.

Formulas you can re-run

  • One-off build (KES) = sum over roles of (days for that role × KES day rate for that role).
  • Monthly inference (KES) = turns per month × (input tokens per turn × input price + output tokens per turn × output price) ÷ 1,000,000 × 129. Prices are USD per million tokens and 129 is the KES-per-USD rate used in the model.
  • Monthly messaging (KES) = business-initiated WhatsApp messages per month × Kenya rate per message.
  • Monthly support (KES) = support days per month × KES day rate for the role doing the support.
  • Monthly run (KES) = inference + messaging + hosting + support.
  • First-year total (KES) = one-off build + 12 × monthly run.

The inference line is linear. Doubling conversations doubles that line, and switching models changes only the price terms.

Meta's developer page states that rates vary by recipient market and lists Kenya under the "Rest of Africa" region. The Kenya per-message figure is not in the page text, so the messaging line uses the illustrative KES 1.00 rate.

AI agent development cost in KES by scenario

The three scenarios are:

  • Simple customer assistant: answers questions on a website or app and hands off to a person.
  • Connected workflow: an agent on WhatsApp that reads and writes to one business system, such as a CRM or order tracker.
  • Regulated multi-agent: several agents, a review and audit layer, and data-protection documentation.

Build cost uses Pawanax list day rates. The day counts are illustrative assumptions.

Monthly run cost uses the same scenarios. Each input is an illustrative assumption except the model prices.

Monthly run (KES)16,76892,923332,840
Annual run (KES)201,2161,115,0763,994,080

The connected scenario assumes 18,000 billable business-initiated messages at the illustrative KES 1.00 rate. Meta's free tier covers service messages, so it does not reduce this line. That is conservative.

Comparing the bottom-up run cost with the 15 to 25 per cent benchmark, applied to build cost and divided by 12:

  • Simple: benchmark KES 11,529 to 19,216 a month. The model's KES 16,768 falls inside it.
  • Connected: benchmark KES 35,556 to 59,259 a month. The model's KES 92,923 sits above it, mainly because of the messaging and support lines.
  • Regulated: benchmark KES 104,409 to 174,016 a month. The model's KES 332,840 sits above it, driven by the support and hosting assumptions.

Where the bottom-up figure is above the benchmark, check your own support and messaging assumptions before accepting either number.

First-year totals combine the two lines:

What competitors publish

Kenyan AI services pages publish their own ranges. The aiconsultant.co.ke page, marked "Updated 20 August 2026" and fetched on 4 November 2026, lists a website chat assistant at KES 150,000 to 500,000 (2 to 4 weeks), a WhatsApp AI agent at KES 250,000 to 1,200,000 (3 to 8 weeks), and a custom AI system at KES 600,000 to 4,000,000 or more (2 to 6 months), per aiconsultant.co.ke. Those are one provider's published ranges, not a market survey.

That page also says Meta charges per 24-hour conversation. Meta's current developer page describes per-message billing, so use Meta's page for messaging rates.

Where Pawanax list prices fit

Pawanax publishes fixed-fee packages. At KES 129 per USD, the list prices are:

  • Project minimum: $15,000 (KES 1,935,000)
  • WhatsApp Agent Factory: $48,000 (KES 6,192,000)
  • Enterprise Agent OS: $185,000 (KES 23,865,000)

The day rates in the build table are the Pawanax list rates: Principal $2,000 (KES 258,000), AI Architect $1,250 (KES 161,250), Delivery Engineer $700 (KES 90,300), and Analyst / Ops $450 (KES 58,050).

A package price is not the day count multiplied by the day rate. The package scopes below are published offer terms (evidence class: Proposed), not delivery records. Enterprise Agent OS, for example, lists an architecture and security review, a monitoring baseline, a model-risk and data-protection documentation pack, and change management. The day model does not count those items. Compare the two numbers side by side rather than treating one as the other.

Approximate mapping: the simple assistant sits nearest the project minimum, the connected workflow nearest WhatsApp Agent Factory when the channel is WhatsApp, and the regulated scenario nearest Enterprise Agent OS. The documentation pack is a deliverable, not a compliance certification. Check your own obligations with counsel.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI chatbot cost in Kenya?

In this model, a simple assistant costs KES 922,350 to build at the illustrative day counts, plus about KES 16,768 a month to run. The aiconsultant.co.ke page gives KES 150,000 to 500,000 for a website chat assistant. The two ranges differ because they assume different scopes, so compare the scope before comparing the price.

What does it cost to run an AI agent each month?

Run cost is the sum of inference, messaging, hosting, and support. In the model it ranges from KES 16,768 a month for a simple assistant to KES 332,840 for a regulated multi-agent system. Support is the largest driver in the two larger scenarios, so that line deserves the most scrutiny.

Does the choice of AI model change the cost much?

It changes the inference line only. For the simple scenario, moving from Haiku 5.5 to Sonnet 5.5 at the same volume raises inference from KES 158 to about KES 3,161 a month, using the prices on the Claude pricing page. Support and hosting assumptions move the total far more.

Can I use this model for my own budget?

Yes, if you replace the illustrative inputs with your own volumes, day counts, hosting quotes, and the Kenya WhatsApp rate from Meta's rate card. The model excludes taxes, exchange-rate movement, and any fee from a third-party platform or Business Solution Provider. Add those lines if they apply to you.

Next step

If you want these formulas applied to your volumes, systems, and compliance needs, start with the AI strategy consultancy page. Bring your monthly conversation count, the systems the agent must read or write, and the channel it will run on.
